THE CHERISHED TRADITIONAL DISH AND DRINKS OF THE AHANTA PEOPLE
The most cherished traditional dish of the Ahanta people is Fomfom, and the best is made with red maize, also known as Abele Azani. It is usually served with pepper and fried fish or stew with kakoo. Abele Azani fomfom is held in high esteem because, according to oral tradition, it is believed to cure sickness, promote long life, and bring good health. It also has deep spiritual significance and an ancestral connection that strengthens the bond between the living and the dead. Furthermore, it is considered a weapon to drive away evil spirits from homes, a means of fortification against malevolent forces, and a source of good luck during planting and harvesting seasons.
In terms of drinks, the Ahanta people are traditionally known as producers of palm wine, called Nsa Fuufuw, tapped from palm trees, and Adoka, a traditional drink made from the Ntootoon tree. Together, food and drink among the Ahanta people are not just for nourishment. They are medicine, protection, and a way of keeping the connection with ancestors and the land alive.
